Commonly misspelled as Veteran's or Veterans', Veterans Day occurs on November 11 every year in the United States in honor of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I.

History by Dates:

1918: November 11, the ends of World War 1 (also known as the First World War, the Great War, the Seminal Catastrophe, and initially in North America as the European War)

1919: Nov. 11, 1919, which marked the first anniversary of the end of World War I, was proclaimed Armistice Day by President Woodrow Wilson.

1926: Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance.

1938: November 11th became a national holiday.

1947: Led by Raymond Weeks, the first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Alabama. Raymond, a World War II veteran, organized "National Veterans Day," which included a parade and other festivities, to honor all veterans.

1954President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name to Veterans Day to honor veterans of all American wars. The day is to honor those who have died fighting as well as those who survived.

1968: The Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971

1975President Gerald Ford signed a law reverting the holiday to November 11 because of the important historical significance that date held.
